Keeping Liberia's Girls in School, One Month at a Time
A girl should never have to choose between her health and her education. 1 in 10 girls in Africa misses school every month because she has no menstrual hygiene products. Help BDI give 200 school girls in Liberia a full year of supplies - so not one of them misses another day.
Fatima is 14 years old. She attends a government school in Sinoe County, Liberia. She is bright. She is curious. She wants to be a nurse.
But until this year, Fatima missed 3 to 4 days of school every month. Not because she was sick. Not because her family could not pay the fees. Because she had no menstrual hygiene products, the shame of managing her period without them kept her at home.
Her teacher recorded it as absenteeism. Fatima called it something she could not name out loud.
Then BDI's school hygiene programme reached her school. Fatima received a full-year hygiene kit. She has not missed a single school day since. Her attendance is now perfect.
"I used to be very scared every month. Now I just go to school."
Fatima's story is not rare. It is the story of one in ten girls across Africa, repeated in classrooms in every county in Liberia. A girl who is absent three days a month is absent for a full month every school year. Girls who fall behind drop out. Girls who drop out face early marriage, limited income, and reduced futures.
